San Francisco Circuits announces they are fully compliant with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Special Publication 800-171 requiring companies to adhere to specific guidelines to protect data and information pertaining to federal or state agencies. Being in compliance ensures proper data handling is in place for maintaining the trust of partners, vendors, contractors, and customers–especially when federal or state agencies are involved. The federal government requires companies to be compliant with 800-171 to protect Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI).

NIST 800-171 protects controlled unclassified information in nonfederal systems

CUI is sensitive information relevant to the interests of the United States government. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) created Special Publication 800-171 to help protect Controlled Unclassified Information. These standards must be followed by anyone dealing with any type of potentially sensitive information for federal or state agencies. The process to achieve NIST 800-171 compliance is long and arduous, and San Francisco Circuits is proud to announce they are now fully compliant.

What Does it Mean to be in NIST 800-171 Compliance?

NIST 800-171 governs Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) in Non-Federal systems and companies. NIST 800-171 compliance lays out a set of standards that define how to safeguard and distribute sensitive material. The primary reason for the compliance is to make sure unclassified information that isn’t part of federal information systems and organizations is properly protected and consistent. Under the federal regulations, companies that have NIST 800-171 compliance are required to assess and document handling of information in more than a dozen different areas.

NIST 800-171 compliance requires companies to abide by the requirements

What Requirements are Necessary for NIST 800-171 Compliance?

Not all customers or clients require NIST 800-171 certification, but most projects pertaining to government contracts require it according to federal law. With certification in NIST 800-171, it ensures the safety and protection of information and sensitive project data. There are a number of requirements to fulfill for NIST 800-171 certification, and they are:

  • Limiting access to the system.

    • There must be processes in place that limit system access to authorized users only.

  • CUI flow must be controlled.

    • CUI can be transmitted to a number of different locations and users, and the transmission/flow must be controlled and monitored.

  • Prevent non-privileged users from gaining access.

    • There must be a clear separation of individuals’ responsibilities to reduce the risk of fraud and improper transmission of sensitive information.

  • Automatically shut down a session due to suspicious activity.

    • There needs to be a limit to login attempts and warning banners and locking mechanisms that terminate sessions after a period of inactivity to protect information.

  • Encrypting remote access and sessions.

    • There needs to be strict protocols for remote access to ensure the connections are properly encrypted to prevent information from being stolen or improperly accessed.

These are the main requirements for NIST 800-171 compliance, and the federal government takes the protection of sensitive information very seriously. This is a very impressive certification that sets a company apart from other competitors because you know they take the proper precautions and steps to protect sensitive information.
